Bapi Debnath (Neel) is the first cyclist from Tripura and the entire North-East India to have reached Everest Base Camp. He is also recognised globally as the first Bengali cyclist, the third Indian cyclist, and the eighth cyclist in the world to accomplish this remarkable feat.

Further extending his extraordinary legacy, on 17th April 2025, he became the first Indian, the second Bengali, and the third cyclist in the world to reach Mardi Himal Base Camp, Nepal. The very next day, on 18th April 2025, he reached Annapurna Base Camp, Nepal — adding yet another remarkable chapter to an already historic cycling career.

Following his current project he left for Paris, the fabled capital of France in Europe on February 12th 2025. He will cover the entire journey of thousands of km through landscapes of Asia, Middle East and Europe by his bicycle.

In a novel initiative taken possibly for the first time in Tripura young cyclist Bapi Debanath (26), a man born and brought up in Netaji Chaumuhuni area of Sabroom sub divisional town, in the morning of 12th Feb 2026 left for Paris, the fabled capital of France in Europe. He will cover the entire journey of thousands of km through landscapes of Asia, Middle East and Europe by his bicycle through thick and thin. Bapi Debnath’s mission is to create anti-drug and anti-addiction awareness among people as well as to press for inclusion of Psychology as a subject from the primary level of education.

The commencement of Bapi Debnath’s long, arduous and perilous journey was celebrated in a function near his home in Netaji Chaumuhuni area of Sabroom. The programme was attended by the SDM, Sabroom Shibjyoti Dutta, SDPO Nityananda Sarkar, vice chairman of Sabroom Nagar Panchayat Dipak Das , deputed writer Ashokananda Bardhan and NRI Ujjawal Majumder who works in the USA but came back to Sabroom a few days ago to see his parents.

The daring cyclist Bapi Debnath was also felicitated by officers and jawans of the Sabroom police station . He explained his mission behind the long and arduous journey by bicycle.
